Plot 2

About a question "What the plot is", please read a previous article!

Before I start writing about the plot, I'm writing a little about my present condition.
Now I am in Tampa Florida, but I will go back to Japan in a month. I will restart going to university for two years, and I will graduate school in two years.
In Japan, to graduate university is much easier than America or EU or maybe other countries. Especially, my university is very easy (maybe) because the final exam is only writing something long. The tests are so easy, if you would attend, you will pass it.

I will tell you one anecdote of the test.
A student wrote down how to cook an omelet deliciously on the exam paper of Literature, he (or she?) passed the exam.
And one of my friend wrote down how to be born the praying mantes on the same exam, she passed.
You know? How easy!!

In stead of the easiness, of course we can't find jobs easily. This is the destiny. In the other words, because of we can't find jobs easily even if we graduate the university, our exam is very easy.
I don't know who called Japanese people are diligent and industrious...
No no no, I have to say, my university is kind of strange one. Maybe other universities are different, maybe, maybe...

When I took the exam to enter my university, there was interview after the writing test. Now I know that, then the interviewer decided to make enter or not by that the examinees are strange or not. Strange →Enter, Not strange→Sorry, like that.

Anyhow, ... what am I writing about? oh, my present condition... So, I will leave America and I will restart going to university, and one of my friend will leave America before I go back to Japan, and my home-stay family's mother and father will go to New York tomorrow to stay until summer, and so on, there are so many changes around me at this time.

Anyway! I should start writing about plot for a looooot of people expecting my article about play-writing ha ha ha!

I wrote that "A plot looks like a long path up a hill with obstacles along the way".

Today I will explain what a plot should be step by step.

The first step, Plot answers a simple question.
The simple question means, what the playwright wants to write about; it means theme of the play, or where is the stage on that play, or what is the main story of the play, etc.
Most of the good stories are been able to explain the outlines easily. Thus also the plot should be like that.
If a plot never answer a simple question, the play would never give an answer. So who would give? Who knows.

Next, the question should be clear by the 10 percent point.
This 10 percent point is interesting and good to know. If you will write 10 pages, the question should be answered by the end of 1 page, or if you will write 100 pages, it should be by 10 pages.
I think this point is very important.
The more simple looking, the more difficult and important. Everyone is likely to forget the simple things because it looks like so easy therefore less important. But it is not true!
I should pay attention about that...

And the book said, when you write a plot, you should think "And then what? And then what?" and "What dose the character want and what is he doing to get it?" to continue writing and not to lose a tension of the play.
This should be good way to write, I think.

Huh... I will stop writing to here.
I think I wrote too long. Sorry!

So I will continue writing about Plot also next time.

See you!

Plot

Hello, I wonder who want to read such articles. Who has interest in this title?
In my country, the play is much less popular than America, I think. How about your country??

Anyway, I will write about Plot today.

What is the plot? The plot is a construction of a story. Not only play-writing, novel, movie, but also any kinds of stories have plot.
I refer one book about the play-writing and continue writing, but I'll add my opinions.

Hum, how should I write about that... The plot is a kind of big themes.

I will start about how to use the plot.
When you want to create one story, what will you do? I think the answers are different between each person, but maybe it has some tendencies.
One of them might think about the theme of the story what I want to write.
Another might decide the end of the story what will happen at last.
Another may start writing without thinking.
Another would write lists of ideas on papers...
But, most of them will think about the plot after they decide what kinds of stories they want to write.

Usually, the plot has the beginning, the middle, and the ending. However, I found different thought of that by the book. I will write about it first.

"A plot looks like a long path up a hill with obstacles along the way."(: Playwriting Brief & Brilliant : Julie Jensen)

This view is very interesting for me. It says, the plot is not like a beginning and middle and ending, it is like a way to go up a hill.
The top of the hill means a climax, and the obstacles mean factors that make a story go ahead.

I think this is kind of an abstract saying, but the point is that this thought dose not divide a plot into any parts. So I think this idea to make a plot can make a plot more unify than the idea that plot has the beginning and middle and ending.

I will write about the plot next time minutely.

Huh! I am going to make sushi today from now!
So I will stop writing!!
I did not know how easy to make sushi.
Someday I may write about the recipe... I don't know!

See you!

Character 2

Hum, I don't know why, but I prefer Chardonnay wine to else...
I have to confess, I was too careless! I drank white wine at the dinner today before I started to write this blog!
Usually, I decide not to write blog or some stuffs during drunk because if I did, I would write something strange, unusual, foolish, and crazy.
Don't say that I always write something like that without drunk!
But I drank only one glass of wine, so maybe I will be OK...

Anyway, I will write about Character today.
If you find something odd, you should not mind about it...

I wrote about Character the previous blog, "Character should be interesting."
I will tell about what interesting character is concretely.
Of course, I refer the book about play-writing, but I will tell about my thought also.

First, the character should be Off Balance.
I thought it was interesting view. Off balance, it means they can't stop one place.
For example, a character who is too selfish to think about someone, or a character who is too emotional to control oneself, or something like that.
Um, these example are too normal. So if I will continue thinking of that, umm, a man who loves to go fishing more than his wife, and he might hate his wife when she broke his pole, then some story would start. I don't know this story is interesting or not, but actually off balance people would make stories.
It should be very important to think of making a story.

Next, they must Want something.
This is also interesting view to think about characters.
Maybe somebody wants love, family, freedom, money, treasure, toys, or food. The person who wants something would never stop themselves, so the story will begin.
I think the important part of this is that every character must want something, not only main characters.
It may mean every person in the real world want something all the time during who is alive.

Third, they have Blind Spots.
The blind spots means the thing the character will never think and notice about it.
The characters' blind spots would let them in both tragedy and comedy.
I think this is similar to off balance, but the difference is the off balance makes characters interesting, but the blind spots make conclusion of the characters' future. Mm, also I can say the off balance makes conclusion, and the blind spots make interesting, so these are almost same! But just if I think of one of them, it would lack something, so I think I should think of both.
So, in my opinion, these are like one-set.

At last, they Don't Tell the Truth.
Hum, I don't know what truth is, but maybe each play has the truth of that the characters live in.
I think this is too abstract to say exactly what this is.
I am not sure even the writer know the truth in the play.
However this view is also important. If one character would tell everything in the play, maybe only thing we can do is to dump the curtain...

Huh! Finally I have finished writing about the character!
I will write about Plot next time.

Now I can drink the second glass of the wine...!
Wow!

See you!

Character

I could not write this blog yesterday because I could not make time to write... although I was not busy!!!
I went to a dance club at the midnight yesterday. To watch people who keep moving made me strange feeling. It is similar to swimming in the sea. Waves keep coming, we forget what the normal ground is.
The dance club was fun, I experienced good time.

Anyway, today's theme is the Character in play-writing.

As usual, I will refer the book's words.
"Characters should be interesting!"
Yes, that's the important point even though it seems very normal thing.
I think writers are likely to forget about to make interesting characters. Because they want to make good stories, they sometimes don't think about the characters. It's including me, sometimes...
The character is very important. Some critics say, "The most important thing in the story must be characters. " Surely, the character is attractive, I want to continue reading the book if I could not feel strong interest in the story.

What is the interesting characters?

About that, I will write next time. To be continue...

Anyhow, today is the Valentin day in USA!
In Japan, girls gift chocolates people who like or a person who love. But many country seem opposite.
I used to make cookies for the Valentin day in Japan. But today, I have no plan to do for the Valentin.
Umm...
Let's forget about it!
Let's go to bookstore!
Lovely books are waiting for me!
Yeah!

Happy Valentin!!

See you.

Dialogue

A book about each person's personality by birthday said, I have a bad habit called "addictive".
I am sorry, but I should agree with that. I am an addictive person...
So, I should be careful about something could be addictive more than anybody.
I am writing such things because I thought I wanted to have a Bechelovka, called cement among my friend. This is an alcohol, tremendous, marvelous liquor in the world, especially for me. The liquor is from Check, if you don't know, you should try once, with tonic water...!!
Anyway, I must be careful the addictive creature. So, now I started writing in stead of having an alcohol, no, just a joke...

Today's theme is the Dialogue. Continuing yesterday's theme, it is about a play-writing. Hum.

What is the dialogue in a play??
In the play, the dialogue has a role to make the story progress. And I think it also expresses the character's personality.
The book I have read since yesterday said, the dialogue is action.
Um, surely, dialogue is same as action like jumping or standing up because these are all expression. Maybe I should not think of them separately.
If I thought of them separately, I guess the play would be unclear because of the dialogue could be make another world from the play's world.
Next, dialog should be learn and not explanatory. These are not so rare.

The point that interesting is, to write plays is almost to write a dialog, in spite of to write novels is dialog and description. The play wrights have to make a world only write a dialogue even though they can write about acting.
However, the book also said, sometimes dialogue is not spoken. Hum, I think some contemporary plays have almost no dialog.

Umm, these story about dialogue is kind of vague...
Because! I don't know what should I write about!!
Maybe next theme is more interesting... the theme will be Character.

Anyway, dialog must be very important for play. So I would adapt these story about dialogue later...

Huh!
I will sleep without drinking.
Please don't misunderstand! I don't always drink something before sleeping...!!

See you.

Drama

Now, I am hungry, starving desperately. But, I will write something in stead of making a mess in the kitchen.

The new theme has came out! Next to Ravel, also this theme is interested by a few people, maybe.

It's the Play Writing.

Last night, I dreamed a strange dream. The dream is like that;
One day, I selected as an actress at a TV drama, but really small role. And I went to a first meeting of the drama's staffs and actors and actresses. Then, I met an actor who I liked very much.
I could not see his face directly by shame. However this shame is not from my fan spirit of him, but shame on my poor acting skill. It is realistic...
So, when the meeting had finished, I decided to polish my skill of acting.
That's it.

Hum, actually I sometimes dream about making a movie or acting something even though I don't think about becoming such careers. I thought about that why I saw the dream today this morning. I dream only thing that I likely to dream usually. So, this sign which I saw such a dream means something now I desire to do... Maybe.

Anyhow, I went to a bookstore and tried to find some books about acting... Yes, now I can read such kind of technical books more than before!
I found a book about play-writing. It was very good for me because play-writing's skill is not only for plays, but also writing novels, and something making stories. It means I would be able to adapt the play-writing skills to writing novels.

I have to confess that this is not my first time to try to read such kind of play-writing books, nevertheless this attempt should be interesting for me.
I tried to read it today, and I found some interesting rules from the books.

But! I will write about them tomorrow, maybe. Because I read only a small amount of the books today, my information would not be enough to write...
It is not because of I am hungry...!!!

Now I can have a dinner!

See you.

Chirp, chirp

Hum, I should go to a library if I would continue searching about Ravel. Today I tried to find a book about only Ravel in another bookstore, but I could not.
I think that's because of Ravel is not so famous like Mozart or Beethoven. Actually, I knew the name of him, but I had not listened to his works until this year.
Anyhow, I did not read about him today, so I can't write about him. So, I will write about something different.

Now I can hear some insects' chirps. In Japan, these "bell-ringing" crickets' sounds are loved by people very much, of course including me. But I guess most of countries' people don't enjoy them so much, right?
I know an interesting research about that.
A person's brain has a right brain and a left brain, and the right brain administers feelings, creativity and something sensual one, and the left brain dose logic, language, number, and something organized one. Thus, every sound is divided and managed between the right brain and the left brain. For example, machine's rattled goes to right brain, and some words like "How are you" goes to left brain.
But! A strange result was found. When Japanese people listen to insects' chirps, these are managed by left brain although American people and European people and other country's people managed by right brain. Also Polynesian people are same as Japanese.
Not only the insects' chirps, the sound of wind, some particular music instruments' sound, and so on.
Why? The research guessed it is because Japanese language has some words constituted by only vowel sounds, for example "i [i]" means a stomach, and "u [wu]" means one of the birds, and "e" means a picture, "o" means a tail, so a brain manages some particular sounds as words. Because Polynesian language has that kind of sounds, researcher concluded this result.
So, I don't know if it is because of the result, actually Japanese language have a lot of onomatopoeia to use for insect's chirps, wind's sounds, and so on.
Umm, Is it interesting for you?? I don't know, but anyway Japanese people listen to insects' chirps as words using the left brain.
It is said that is why Japanese people sleep so much. If you would go to Japan, you would be surprised at a lot of people are sleeping in trains! They are sleepy because they use left brain for a lot of noise!!
That's why I always overslept!!
No, just a kidding.
I don't know if Polynesian people sleep so much, Um, I will research about Polynesian people some day...

I know this is kind of subjective subject because of I am Japanese, but if I would look up, I think I would be able find something about other country's specialty of brains.
Brains are interesting.
I don't think people can know about all faculty of brains, and I don't hope people will do at all.
But, even only a slight finding about brain is very interesting.

At last, I want to say something.
I am exhausted by writing such technical story...!!!
Needless to say, I used dictionary a lot. I don't want to write such difficult things again. Never! Never!!
Ah, I wish I would be good at using English like that I would never be tired by writing some difficult sentences.
I really hope!

Then...
See you

I tried to read about Ravel today also...

I don't know if I am a kind of a person who is likely to be bored. I would stop writing about Ravel in this blog after today, maybe.

At first, it is possible that Ravel is homosexual person. Actually, some people whispered that might be true because no body was known as his girl friend, and he had never married, but also no one as his boy friend. It's just a mystery. In this point, I guessed Debussy avoid him. I don't know about Debussy, he is gay or not..

Ravel was very short man about 5 feet, and he got sick of verve and brain, and died.
I have to say, from only that kind of superficial information, I can't judge anything. So, I should find a book which has more detail... I will try to find.

Huh! To read such technical book is actually good exercise for me but makes me tired. If I would find something interesting information about Ravel, I will write about it.
Especially, I didn't find why he could compose such random sounds at last, so I want to continue searching about it.

I don't know what I will write tomorrow, but I may write something tomorrow even though I am almost sure nobody reads these!!!

See you.

Sunday, February 8, 2009

If you want to buy a classic CD, you should buy one played by whom he has deviate face.

I learned it. I don't know why, but I guess it makes sense that a deviate sometimes dose great job. Especially somethings like classic which ordinary people don't do likely have this tendency, I think.
Anyway, I went to a bookstore today and bought two CDs, one of them is Ravel's works and the other is Debussy's which has a man's face who plays in the CD seems to have a sense of deviate, and the CD is perfect. I can't mention the name because I said something bad like he seems deviate... If you have interest about it, I will tell you personaly, so give me e-mail address.

Anyhow, I looked up about Ravel today. But actually I didn't forget that I couldn't read English books especially it has a lot of technical terms, so I didn't expect that I finished the search within one day. Yes, I couldn't. This is not my fault likes I wake up late and I went to the book store very late time so didn't have enough time to look up.

I couldn't find a book which is only about Ravel. In stead of that, I found a very thick book about classic music's composers' lives, and the book included a few pages about Ravel.
The book said, Ravel minded about that a lot of people said he imitated Debbussy's works. Debussy is a composer who births 1862. Ravel borned 1875. It said, Ravel is much younger than Debussy. And although Ravel's compose published earlier than Debussy's, Ravel was said "Ravel imitated Debussy's work". Why? Who knows. It's interesting. Do you think it relates with their difference of age? I don't know.
In addition, the book said Debussy hated his composes or his success even though he encouraged him at first when Ravel appeared in the world of Europe's music. Oppositely, Ravel respected Debussy and always polite to him. He had played Debussy's musics in his ochestra. Their friendship seems kind of difficult.
Hmm, I am interested in Ravel's and Debussy's personality. Now I am little bit suspicious that one of them or both of them might be a gay or not. I have no idea, but I would find the fact.
And actually, their music have similality. Ravel said it must have been "coincidence".

I planed to look up more tomorrow...

P.S. I found a book about Chopin written by Liszt. I found that Liszt was one of Chopin's friend, and they are both great composer. It seems also interesting, but maybe I can't read the book now because of his writing is too difficult for me.
Umm, next time.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Who reads?

I have no idea. But I want to write some.

I am listening Ravel's piano solo. I can't imagine how he composed them. Maybe I can understand a little how Beethoven or Chopin did because their music have a kind of rules like a code or rhythm, but Ravel's those are so random at least for me. I know his music has rules because his music has peace. But this rule is literally the peace of sound of raindrops. I can't imagine how he found these sounds.
Hum, I want to read about Ravel a little. How did he live, who were his friends and what did he think. I will find a book about him tomorrow. It may be interesting.
I will write about that tomorrow, maybe. Although no one reads this.
